Megan Dale Metcalf

Megan Dale Metcalf, a longtime resident of Turlock and beloved English teacher at Turlock High was born at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto on February 28, 1949, to Harry and Deane Metcalf. She passed away on August 8, 2026, in Turlock, CA. Her passing was peaceful and dignified. She was married to her husband Llewellyn (Lew) Boyle for over 50 years. And although she had no children by birth, she had a "family" of literally thousands of former students who were enrolled in her classes. Quite a legacy. Professionally, Megan was an exemplary teacher. She taught 7th and 8th grade English at Patterson Junior High from 1972 to 1985. In 1985, she was hired by Turlock High and taught Honors English to Juniors until her retirement in 2005. She also served as Department Chair for many years. She found that the imagery, style, and snarky humor of Mark Twain and Edgar Allen Poe appealed to her students' tastes, and presumably hers as well. She pursued her profession with passion and mindfulness. She was keenly aware of her responsibility as a role model for her students. ed her students' diversity, valuing each student's individuality as they contributed to the tapestry of her classes. Beyond her profession, Megan was a woman of varied interests and talents. As a youngster, she rode horses, drove her family's tractor at their ranch, and regularly went hunting and fishing with her dad. Her love of the outdoors continued throughout her life. Sharing nature' beauty with her at Shasta, Yosemite, Mendocino, and countless other places was a real joy. In school she was a cheerleader in both high school and college. She excelled at donkey basketball (yes, there WAS such a thing!). She graduated from what was Stanislaus State College at the time and was awarded the Burton Vasche Award at commencement. She also earned her teaching credential at Stanislaus State College. As an adult, she developed an affinity for fine dining and California chardonnay, served at cellar temperature, of course. She was also an avid baseball/softball fan. She was the Official Scorekeeper for the Boyle's Lancers, a locally famous (infamous?) Turlock City League softball team of the 1980's. She also served as the editor of Foul Balls, the team's newsletter, where her quick wit and "Creative" sense of humor made Foul Balls must-read. She was a stalwart Giants supporter and was a big fan of the legendary Giants announcers, Mike Krukow and Duane Kuyper. Megan laughed a lot, cried a little, and lived life on her terms. And as Mike Krukow would say, she clearly conquered the fear of having a good time. Megan was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Deane Metcalf, and by her sisters Darcy Wright and Mary Lynne Aubert. She is survived by her husband Llewellyn, her sister Michele Bartholomew, nieces and nephews Tess Whitehurst (Ted) of Los Banos, Aaron Whitehurst (Tara) of Texas, Anne Snyder of Turlock, John Aubert (Nancy) of Davis, Kelly Caulfield (Tom) of San Jose, Laura Keenan of New York, and Lynne Aubert of Connecticut.
